Protein, moisture and grain quality parameters

Each parameter is evaluated within the calibration installed for the relevant sample.

Protein

Compare protein content in wheat, barley and other suitable samples with purchasing specifications or production targets.

Moisture

Monitor sample moisture content to inform grain intake, drying and storage decisions.

Oil

Evaluate the composition of oilseeds and related raw materials using the appropriate product calibration.

Gluten & Zeleny

Explore the quality indicators supported by the available calibration for wheat and flour applications.

The scope of ash and other parameters also depends on the sample. An installed calibration does not guarantee the same performance for every product or measurement range. Explore protein analysers and selection criteria.

ANALYSER SELECTION GUIDE

Three key decisions when choosing a grain analyser

Define your sample, measurement purpose and work location together.

01 / SAMPLE AND PARAMETER

Which result do you need, and in which product?

Protein and moisture in wheat, oil in oilseeds, and ash in flour require different calibrations. List whole-grain and ground samples together with the measurement ranges you need.

Protein analysis and instrument selection
02 / WORK LOCATION

Grain intake or portable analysis?

Daily sample volume, frequency of transport and hectolitre weight requirements affect the choice. Consider XGrain for a fixed intake workflow and SGrain when moving analysis between locations. Check environmental and power supply conditions together.

03 / QUOTATION SCOPE

Which services are included in the price?

Consider the calibration package, sample cells, data transfer, installation and operator training alongside the instrument price. Clarify maintenance and support scope before requesting a quotation.

INTERPRET RESULTS WITH CONFIDENCE

In NIR analysis, the instrument, sample and calibration work together.

A NIR analyser evaluates spectral information from the sample using a product- and parameter-specific calibration. XGrain and SGrain use NIT, which measures near-infrared light transmitted through the sample. Suitability depends on the installed calibration and how representative the sample is, as well as the model.

We plan instrument selection around reference analyses and your actual operating conditions. Define the intended use of results and acceptance criteria before installation.

NIR calibration and verification guide
  1. Take a representative sample

Analyse a sample that represents the batch quality, rather than just one point in the batch. Treat sampling and preparation as part of the measurement process.

    Sampling and quality control
  2. Select the appropriate calibration

The sample type, parameter and expected range must match the instrument scope. Identify any additional accessories needed for flour or powder samples.

    Calibration and verification support
  3. Monitor against reference results

Plan comparisons with representative samples after installation. When differences arise, review sample preparation, environment and instrument condition together.

Frequently asked questions about NIR grain analysers

Clarify your questions about model choice, measurement scope and delivery. See the product pages for detailed sample and calibration information.

What is the main difference between XGrain and SGrain?

XGrain supports grain intake and laboratory workflows with its built-in hectolitre weight module. SGrain focuses on portability and work across locations with a suitable 12 V power supply. The choice depends on sample type, daily analysis volume and operating environment, as well as hectolitre weight requirements.

Which values can a NIR grain analyser measure?

XGrain and SGrain can evaluate parameters such as protein, moisture, oil, gluten, ash and Zeleny within the calibration installed for the relevant sample. Not all these values apply to every grain or flour sample. The product–parameter combination is checked before quotation.

Can wheat, barley, maize and flour be analysed on the same instrument?

Different grain and flour samples can be analysed on the same instrument with the relevant product calibrations and appropriate sample accessories. A wheat calibration cannot be applied directly to maize or flour. We define the instrument scope by considering the products and parameters you need to measure together.

How are NIR and NIT related?

NIR refers to analysis technologies operating at near-infrared wavelengths. NIT is a transmission approach based on light passing through the sample. XGrain and SGrain evaluate the resulting spectrum using a calibration appropriate to the sample and parameter being measured.

Why is NIR analyser calibration important?

Results rely on calibration models that use the relationship between the measured spectrum and reference laboratory analyses. Suitability must be checked for new sample types, measurement ranges or operating conditions. Reference comparisons with representative samples during installation and use allow performance to be monitored.

What determines the price of a grain analyser?

The XGrain or SGrain model, product and parameter calibrations, sample accessories, installation, operator training and technical support scope are assessed together. For a current quotation, share the products to be analysed, daily sample volume and operating location. The scope of supply is clearly stated in your quotation.

Can a NIR analyser replace a moisture meter?

NIR systems are used by operations seeking to assess protein and other quality parameters alongside moisture, with an appropriate calibration. A separate moisture meter may suit field or storage work requiring moisture checks only. Select the instrument according to the measurement purpose and need for reference verification.

How are installation and after-sales support planned?

We determine the instrument configuration by assessing sample type, target parameters and operating environment. Installation, operator training, calibration verification and maintenance requirements are clarified in the quotation. Businesses across Türkiye can discuss service and delivery conditions with the MAK Analiz team.
